Bodhi has behavioral special needs and requires someone willing to manage his resource guarding and aggressive behavior.
Due to Bodhi's behavioral issues we (Bodhi's care team of veterinarian, behavior expert, and current guardians) believe that unless a very specific home is found Bodhi will only continue to suffer in this life. He is only comfortable in his current home or at his trainers home. In all other environments he risks becoming aggressive and biting the public. We do not consider this option lightly and without weighing it aginst all possible outcomes.
Bodhi has genegic resource guarding. With the right support he his resource guarding has issue has lessoned. Resource guarding means he will get ahold of random items hold them, posible chew them, and if you attempt to take them away he will bite you.
He has drawn blood on hands when someone has attempted to forcefully remove something from his mouth on more than one occasion.
We have been training him to "drop" and trade stolen items. He will do this somewhat reliably for Kelsie who has spent the most time training with him.
To help manage this issue Bodhi wears a drag line (short 4 foot rope) at all times in and out of the house. This line can be used to stop him before he gets to an item or to hold him in an open space when he has an item before he has taken the item to one of his "dens"/beds.
If he had more time and I were to keep working with him I would sugest muzzle training him to avoid him grabbing and guarding items when on a walk. The muzzle training would be very versitile as a saftey mesure for many of his issues.
Bodhi is extremely sensitive to being restrained either on a leash, behind a fence/crate, or held by hands or by arms.
In a new home with new people Bodhi may need to spend his first 2-3 months in a kennel/environment where no handling by humans is required. During that time humans can slowly work with him through a barrier like a zoo keeper would work with a tiger.
Starting with building a foundation of trust and a communication system before attempting to leash him, groom him, or otherwise handle him.
Choose and control of handling and cooperative care procedures are vital for being able to groom and maintain Bodhi's health long term.
Bodhi was fired from his first few groomers until he started working with KAS. He attempted and did successfully bite his groomer on a couple of occations and he has bitten vets and vet techs during vetrinary care.
With me, Kelsie, I am able to groom him through cooprative care procedures without restraint and he doesn't growl, bite, snap, or show any aggression during my grooming sessions with him. In fact he happily jumps onto his platform excited to begin the training/grooming process.
He tollerates the clipers, dremal, and siccsors with little effort. He does require frequent breaks and I usually schedule to groom him compleately over a two or three days.
With KAS present at the vetrinary cinic Bodhi has proven he can transfer his skills around grooming to apply during a vaccination appointment. With me holding him securly he didn't fuss or even attempt to bite the vet.
Progress is possible and he can be a very easy dog for someone with a strong understanding of cooprative care training protocals and can listen to body language.
Bodhi Lemon is one of the smartest and most motivated dogs when it comes to his studies. He understands a many number of cues and tricks.
"Base" = go to training station
"Drop" = drop what you are holding, toy. We are working on expanding this to chews and eventual found/stolen items.
"Sit" = he sits
"Fetch" = he chases his toy or a treat
"Load Up" = Go in crate/kennel
"Up Up" - If Bodhi wants to be lifted up he will put his paws on your leg in response = get picked up
Sit Pritty with hand signals
Spin with hand signals
Shake
"Bodhi" = come
Bodhi needs ample activity. He has thrived when on our little farm and he gets to go nose to nose with the horses. He has a great recall and makes a really fun tiny but mighty hiking companion.
I think he could use about 4 hours of rigorous physical activity a day.
Bodhi absolutely loves to play tug and fetch and I recently use games such as this as reinforcers.
